The COVID-19 pandemic reshaped lives across the globe, but its effects continue to be deeply felt in developing countries like Uganda. While many parts of the world have begun to recover, rural communities—especially those supporting vulnerable children—are still facing serious challenges. In Rubanda District in southwestern Uganda, theimpact remains visible every day.

Greenfield Nursery and Primary School, a subsidiary project of Greenfield Kids Foundation, stands at the heart of this reality. As a community-based organization registered with the Rubanda District Local Government under Ugandan law, the foundation is committed to supporting orphans and needy children through access to quality education. The school itself is officially registered with the Ministry of Education and Sports and currently serves over 580 children.
However, the effects of COVID-19 have made this mission more difficult—and more urgent—than ever before.
Education Disruption and Its Long-Term Impact
Uganda experienced one of the longest school closures in the world during the COVID-19 pandemic. For nearly two years, children were out of school, cut off from structured learning, teachers, and essential academic support.
In urban areas, some students were able to continue learning online. But in rural districts like Rubanda, this was not possible for most families. Limited access to electricity, internet, and digital devices meant that thousands of children were left behind.
At Greenfield Nursery and Primary School, many learners returned after the lockdown with significant learning gaps. Some struggled to read or write at their previous level, while others lost confidence in their ability to learn. Even more concerning, some children never returned at all.
Girls were particularly affected, with increased cases of early marriages and teenage pregnancies during the lockdown. For many vulnerable children, school is not just a place of learning—it is also a place of safety, stability, and hope. Its absence had serious consequences.
Rising Poverty and Economic Strain
The economic effects of COVID-19 have been devastating for families across Uganda. Lockdowns disrupted livelihoods, closed small businesses, and reduced incomes. In rural areas, where many families rely on daily earnings or small-scale farming, the impact was immediate and severe.
Even after restrictions were lifted, recovery has been slow. Prices of essential goods—including food, fuel, and school supplies—remain high. For many families, sending a child to school has become a financial burden they simply cannot manage.
This has led to an increase in the number of children relying on charitable support. At Greenfield Kids Foundation, the number of vulnerable children needing assistance has grown significantly. Today, the school supports more than 580 learners, many of whom depend on the foundation not only for education but also for meals, uniforms, and basic care.
Standing with the Community During COVID-19
Despite the immense challenges brought by the pandemic, Greenfield Kids Foundation remained committed to its children. During the lockdown period—when schools were closed and families were struggling—the foundation took a critical step to support the most vulnerable.
Food was delivered directly to all children under the support of Greenfield Kids Foundation.
This effort ensured that no child went hungry during one of the most difficult times in recent history. While many families had lost their sources of income and could not afford basic necessities, the foundation stepped in to provide relief, hope, and dignity.
This initiative not only helped sustain the children physically but also strengthened the bond between the foundation and the community it serves. It demonstrated a deep commitment to care—not just in education, but in every aspect of a child’s well-being.
Decline in Donor Support
While the need for support increased during and after the pandemic, donor funding unfortunately declined. Many individuals and organizations around the world were also affected by the economic downturn, forcing them to reduce or pause their contributions.
For a community-based organization like Greenfield Kids Foundation, this has created a major challenge. The foundation must now serve more children with fewer resources. Programs that once ran smoothly are now under strain, and every available resource must be stretched to meet growing demand.
Despite these challenges, the foundation has remained committed to its mission—ensuring that vulnerable children continue to access education and care.
Increased Vulnerability Among Children
COVID-19 did not only disrupt education and income—it also increased the vulnerability of children. Some lost parents or guardians during the pandemic, increasing the number of orphans in already struggling communities. Others faced neglect, malnutrition, or were forced into child labor to help support their families.
Without intervention, these children are at risk of falling into a cycle of poverty that can last a lifetime. Education remains one of the most powerful tools to break that cycle—but only if it is accessible.
Greenfield Nursery and Primary School continues to provide that access. As a subsidiary project of Greenfield Kids Foundation, the school offers a safe, supportive environment where children can learn, grow, and rebuild their futures.
Rebuilding Lives Through Education
Recovery from COVID-19 is not just about reopening schools—it is about restoring opportunity. At Greenfield, efforts are ongoing to help children recover academically and emotionally from the effects of the pandemic.
These efforts include:
- Providing affordable and supported education for vulnerable children
- Offering meals to improve nutrition and concentration
- Supplying learning materials and school uniforms
- Creating a nurturing and safe environment for all learners
However, these efforts require consistent support.
