Addressing Critical Health and Sanitation Challenges
Rubanda faces severe challenges in accessing clean and safe drinking water. The area is plagued by open drainage channels filled with waste, discarded rubbish, and breeding grounds for mosquitoes and rodents. Poor sanitation and inadequate waste management contribute to frequent outbreaks of diseases such as typhoid, cholera, malaria, and tuberculosis. These health risks are further compounded by the high prevalence of HIV/AIDS and malnutrition, which affect many families in the community.
Limited financial resources force families to rely on inexpensive staple foods like matooke, cassava, beans, and maize. Protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, eggs, and fruits are often unaffordable, and many households can only afford one meal per day. This lack of proper nutrition has a direct impact on children's health, growth, and ability to concentrate in school.
Recognizing that access to healthcare, proper nutrition, and social support is key to breaking the cycle of poverty, Greenfield Kids School Uganda has developed a comprehensive program to address these challenges.
1. Social Support Services
We offer professional social work support to children and their families, ensuring that they receive the guidance and assistance needed to overcome personal and family-related challenges. Our social workers provide counseling, follow-ups, and intervention services to address issues such as school absenteeism, family conflicts, and cases of mistreatment.
2. Access to Nutritious Meals
Proper nutrition is essential for children’s growth and academic performance. To support this, we provide every child in our program with two nutritious meals per day. For some, these may be the only meals they receive. By ensuring that children are well-fed, we help them stay focused and perform better in school.
3. Clean Water Supply
Access to clean drinking water is fundamental to good health. At Greenfield Kids School Uganda, we maintain a reliable water supply system, ensuring that all students and staff have access to safe drinking water at all times.
4. Health and Medical Care
We facilitate access to basic healthcare services for children in our program. This includes consultations and treatment for common illnesses such as malaria, typhoid, and bacterial infections. A healthy child is more likely to attend school regularly and perform well academically.
5. Health Education and Community Trainings
Education is a powerful tool in promoting better health practices. Our health education program provides lessons on personal hygiene, general health, reproductive health, and disease prevention. Additionally, we run a Community Health Club, where members receive training on important topics like sanitation, malaria prevention, family planning, and sexual health. These trained members then share the knowledge with others in the community, fostering a culture of health awareness and preventive care.
Building a Healthier Future
At Greenfield Kids School Uganda, we believe that every child deserves a healthy start in life. By providing essential support in nutrition, healthcare, and social services, we empower children and their families to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.
Together, we are making a difference—one child, one family, and one community at a time.
