By Greenfield Kids Foundation
As Uganda faces the threat of Ebola outbreaks, schools and communities must take proactive steps to protect children, teachers, and families. At Greenfield Nursery and Primary School, operated by Greenfield Kids Foundation in Rubanda District, Southwestern Uganda, the safety and well-being of our 580 children remain our highest priority.
Many of the children we serve come from vulnerable backgrounds, including orphaned and needy families who have limited access to healthcare and preventive resources. An Ebola outbreak could have devastating consequences for these children, disrupting their education, threatening their health, and placing additional burdens on already struggling families.
Understanding the Ebola Threat
Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) is a serious illness that can spread through direct contact with infected bodily fluids or contaminated surfaces. While Uganda has successfully managed previous outbreaks, the risk of new cases remains a concern.
Schools are particularly important places for prevention efforts because hundreds of children, teachers, and visitors interact daily. Effective preventive measures can help reduce the risk of infection and protect the wider community.
Why Prevention in Schools Is Essential
The lessons learned during previous health emergencies have shown that prevention is far more effective and less costly than responding after an outbreak has spread.
At Greenfield Nursery and Primary School, we are working to strengthen our preparedness through:
- Regular handwashing with soap and clean water
- Use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers
- Improved hygiene and sanitation practices
- Cleaning and disinfection of classrooms and common areas
- Protective supplies for staff and visitors
- Health awareness and early detection measures
- Safe management of school facilities and high-contact surfaces
These measures help create a safer learning environment and allow children to continue their education with confidence.
Challenges Facing Vulnerable Schools
Like many rural schools in Uganda, we operate with limited resources. Maintaining adequate stocks of hygiene and protective supplies for 580 children requires significant support.
Essential items needed include:
- Hand sanitizers
- Liquid and bar soap
- Handwashing stations
- Water storage containers
- Disinfectants and cleaning supplies
- Disposable gloves
- Face masks for emergency use
- Thermometers for health screening
- Cleaning equipment and protective gear
- Health and hygiene educational materials
Without these supplies, it becomes much more difficult to implement the preventive measures recommended by health authorities.
Protecting Education During Health Emergencies
Every child deserves a safe place to learn. During previous health crises, school closures affected children's education, nutrition, and emotional well-being. Vulnerable children were among those most affected.
By investing in prevention today, we can help keep children healthy, reduce disruptions to learning, and strengthen community resilience against future outbreaks.
For many of our pupils, Greenfield Nursery and Primary School is more than a school—it is a place of hope, protection, and opportunity.
How Supporters Can Help
Greenfield Kids Foundation is seeking support from individuals, organizations, businesses, and international partners who wish to help protect vulnerable children from the risks associated with Ebola and other infectious diseases.
Donations can help us purchase:
- Hand sanitizers
- Soap and disinfectants
- Handwashing facilities
- Protective equipment
- Health screening supplies
- Hygiene and sanitation materials
Every contribution, large or small, helps strengthen our preparedness and protects the children entrusted to our care.
